Matthew 19:9
Notes and Thoughts
1. "Whosoever"
A. Man or woman
B. Christian or non-Christian
C. Division over if this is a "covenant" passage
1] Not Old Law of Moses
2] Not New Testament of Christ
3] THIS IS THE LAW FROM THE BEGINNING!
2. Can guilty party re-marry?
- Can't re-marry if she burns the dinner
- IF -- can remarry after adultery ==
- THEN - commit adultery; this is better
- If the divorce is over some "trivial" matter - neither can remarry. If the divorce is for the cause of fornication, the innocent party can remarry. In no case can the guilty party remarry.
- The greek text says, "Whoever marries a put away woman does commit adultery." Any "put away woman" is not a subject to remarry.
3. When is the sin of adultery committed?
- At separation
- I Cor. 7:5
- Health, safety, life, or spiritual welfare may be at stake.
- "Life" is a higher law than marriage.
- At divorce?
- "Put away AND marry another"
- "AND" = conjunction, ties to things of equal weight and importance. EVERY passage uses this same phrase.
- As above, divorce may be necessary for life, safety, health of self and children.
- At subsequent remarriage?
4. Is Adultery a continuing sin?
- Aorist tense = point action, an act of sin
- Present active = durative, linear action
- "Doth commit adultery" is present active
- Study Col. 3:5-7
- "Walked"
- "Lived in them"
5. The Waiting Game
- Divorce for trivial reason = can't remarry
- Year later, partner remarries.
- NOW I can get a "spiritual" divorce for fornication.
- The Key Element: YOU MUST CONTINUE TO LIVE AS THOUGH YOU ARE STILL MARRIED AND COMMITTED TO YOUR SPOUSE.
- Can I date? Would you date while married?
