Matthew 19:9

Notes and Thoughts

1. "Whosoever"
        A. Man or woman
        B. Christian or non-Christian
        C. Division over if this is a "covenant" passage
1] Not Old Law of Moses
2] Not New Testament of Christ
3] THIS IS THE LAW FROM THE BEGINNING!

2. Can guilty party re-marry?
  1. Can't re-marry if she burns the dinner
  2. IF -- can remarry after adultery ==
  3. THEN - commit adultery; this is better
  4. If the divorce is over some "trivial" matter - neither can remarry. If the divorce is for the cause of fornication, the innocent party can remarry. In no case can the guilty party remarry.
  5. The greek text says, "Whoever marries a put away woman does commit adultery." Any "put away woman" is not a subject to remarry.

3. When is the sin of adultery committed?
  1. At separation
    1. I Cor. 7:5
    2. Health, safety, life, or spiritual welfare may be at stake.
    3. "Life" is a higher law than marriage.
  2. At divorce?
    1. "Put away AND marry another"
    2. "AND" = conjunction, ties to things of equal weight and importance. EVERY passage uses this same phrase.
    3. As above, divorce may be necessary for life, safety, health of self and children.
  3. At subsequent remarriage?

4. Is Adultery a continuing sin?
  1. Aorist tense = point action, an act of sin
  2. Present active = durative, linear action
  3. "Doth commit adultery" is present active
  4. Study Col. 3:5-7
    1. "Walked"
    2. "Lived in them"

5. The Waiting Game
  1. Divorce for trivial reason = can't remarry
  2. Year later, partner remarries.
  3. NOW I can get a "spiritual" divorce for fornication.
  4. The Key Element: YOU MUST CONTINUE TO LIVE AS THOUGH YOU ARE STILL MARRIED AND COMMITTED TO YOUR SPOUSE.
  5. Can I date? Would you date while married?
