The State of the Dead

1. What is man?

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23 - spirit, soul, and body
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 - outward man, inward man
  • 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 - home in body, absent from Lord
  • Genesis 2:7 - formed from dust, became living soul
  • Philippians 1:22-24 - in the flesh OR depart to be with Lord
  • Soul (spirit) - housed in a body (flesh)

2. What is death?

  • Matthew 27:50 - Yielded up the spirit
  • Ecc. 12:7 - Body to dust, Spirit to God
  • James 5:26 - Body without spirit = dead
  • 1 Kings 17:21-23 - Let soul come into him again
  • Genesis 35:18 - Her soul was departing (for she died)
  • Basic definition - Separation
  • Clinical - No brain wave activity (Separated from activity)
  • Biological - No heart beat pulse or respiration (from life)
  • Spiritual - Sin is the great separator from God.
  • Biblical - Separation of soul and body

3. What happens to the body?

  • Ecc. 12:7 - returns to dust
  • Gen. 3:19, 23 - came from dust, returns to dust
  • Ps. 103:14 - We are dust
  • Isaiah 64:8 - God is potter, we are clay

4. What happens to the soul (spirit) of man?

  • Ecc. 12:7 - Returns to God, where it came from
  • Ps. 16:8-10 - not left in Sheol (Heb) [Hades - Greek]
  • Acts 2:25-32 - Spake about Jesus not himself
  • 2 Peter 3:7 - Reserved unto fire until judgement
  • Paradise - Luke 23:47
  • Torments - Luke 16:23

5. What is the state (condition) of the departed spirits?

  • Sleeping? Extinction? Ecc. 9:4-6
  • Eternal, immortal - Matthew 10:28
  • Remember, conscious, alert, awake, recognition - Luke 16:23, 25

6. What about the death of Jesus?

  • Matthew 27:50 - Soul departed
  • Matthew 27:57-60 - Body buried
  • Went to Hades - Ps. 16; Acts 2
  • Went to Paradise - Luke 23:43
  • Not to Heaven - John 20:17

7. What is Resurrection?

  • 1 Kings 17:21-23 - Soul came in again
  • John 5:28-29 -

8. Why the Judgment?

  • NOT decide guilt or innocence
    Ecc. 11:3 - determined at death
    Paradise or Torments entered at point of death
