TITLE: Four Drops of Glue
TEXT: Mark 10:4-9
PROPOSITION: God intended for couples to “cleave” (glue) themselves to each other.
QUESTION: Which?
KEY WORD: Principles
SCRIPTURE READING: Same

INTRODUCTION:

  1. “Super Glue” – one drop holds a ton up in the air
  2. Four drops should hold a marriage together.
  3. Greek work for cleave is “glue, stick together, bind”

1.       No Conflict is Unsolvable

    1. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Common to mankind – you are not alone
Tailor made for you – not get bigger than you can handle
God will provide the way of escape – there is a solution
    2. Not saying it is easy
    3. Not saying you will like it
    4. All problems have a solution

2.       Persistence Pays Off

    1. Working through is harder than walking out
    2. We are lazy, take the easy way out, not the best
    3. We do not know how to stay at it, hang in there, hang tough, don’t give up and never quit. We walk out at the first sign of a problem.
    4. “Stick-to-it-ivness” is not in our vocabulary.
One of the reasons marriages worked 50 years ago, they worked at it.
When problem arises now, “I don’t need this.”

3.       Not “demand rights” but “release them”

    1. 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 – Each give self to the other
    2. Liberated woman says, “I’ve got my rights.”
    3. Macho man says, “Don’t boss me. Don’t tie me down.”
    4. God says to both of them, “Give up your rights. Lay down your arms, turn loose of your way, and give in to the other person.”

4.       Our Goal is not “Be Happy” but “Glorify God”

    1. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
      You are not your own.
      You have been bought.
      Therefore: Glorify God
    2. Song – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
    3. What is your highest goal in your marriage?
      Raise children?                                Retire early?
      Fame, power?                                Happiness?
    4. Should be: “To glorify God.”
