HO-HUM WORSHIP (Series)

Theme text: Isaiah 1:10-14

Introduction to series

1.   It is easy to just go through the motions. Sing, stand, sit, listen, go home.

2.   Worship must NEVER be boring, ho-hum.

3.   I want to examine how to avoid the ho-hum in our worship.

 

Giving IS worship.

1.   Giving

a.   Sacrifices under the law were “gifts” Numbers 18:11; Hebrews 5:1

b.   Wise men came to worship Jesus with gifts

c.   Philippians 4:18
 

2.   Primary text – 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

a.   Order – military order to be followed / obeyed

b.   Do – obligation of the churches
 

3.   Specified time

a.   Every Sunday – first day of the week

b.   Preposition (kata in Greek) – is every

                                         i.    Acts 15:21 – every church

                                        ii.    Luke 2:41 – every year

                                      iii.    NEB – Every Sunday
 

4.   Individual Obligation

a.   Each of you – individually

b.   One may put in the check or cash – but involves all

c.   Parents – teach children to give – allowance, mow lawns, work

d.   Lay by = at home
 

5.   Church Treasury

a.   Under Law of Moses – 1 Chronicles 28:1; Malachi 3:10

b.   Mark 12:41

c.   Church must have a treasury – no collections when opportunity or obligation comes due

d.   In store = church treasury

6.   Proportionate

a.   As prospered

b.   According to duties

                                         i.    Family size – parents to care for,

                                        ii.    Income of all in house
 

7.   Do not account for obligations

                                         i.    Just bought a new ______, have to pay for it

                                        ii.    Steal from God to get bigger TV?

                                      iii.    Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God?
 

8.   Generous and willing

a.   Not a debt you own

b.   A gift you choose to give
