  1. Job suffered much

  4. What could you lose and still keep your faith?

Things Job Lost

  1. All 10 children – 7 sons, 3 daughters – 1:18-19

  2. Material prosperity – 1:13-17

  3. His health – 2:7-8 (This is described in the first of this series)

  4. Support of his wife – 2:9; 19:17
    She should have been a “helpmeet” - not a “hurtmeet”

  5. His love of life – 3:1-3; 11-12

    1. He is not suicidal, does not have a death wish.

    2. He wants to die to escape the pain.

  6. Fellowship of the community – 12:4; 16:20; 30:10

  7. Love and support of his family and friends – 16:2; 19:17

    1. 19:14 – My relatives have failed, And my close friends have forgotten me.

    2. 19:19 – All my close friends abhor me, And those whom I love have turned against me.

  8. His faith in God's PRESENT righteousness

    1. 6:4 – For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; My spirit drinks in their poison; The terrors of God are arrayed against me.

    2. 9:17 – For He crushes me with a tempest, And multiplies my wounds without cause.

    3. 10:10 – Did You not pour me out like milk, And curdle me like cheese

    4. 16:9 – He tears me in His wrath, and hates me; He gnashes at me with His teeth; My adversary sharpens His gaze on me.

    5. 16:11 – God has delivered me to the ungodly, And turned me over to the hands of the wicked.

    6. 16:12 – I was at ease, but He has shattered me; He also has taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces; He has set me up for His target,

    7. 16:13 – His archers surround me. He pierces my heart and does not pity; He pours out my gall on the ground.

    8. 16:14 – He breaks me with wound upon wound; He runs at me like a warrior.

    9. 19:12 – His troops come together And build up their road against me; They encamp all around my tent.

    10. 23:16 – For God made my heart weak, And the Almighty terrifies me;

    11. 29:4-5 – 4 Just as I was in the days of my prime, When the friendly counsel of God was over my tent; 5 When the Almighty was yet with me, When my children were around me;

    12. 30:19 – He has cast me into the mire, And I have become like dust and ashes.

    13. 30:21 – But You have become cruel to me; With the strength of Your hand You oppose me.

NOTE: Present vs Future Righteousness

  1. Job felt God had done him wrong.

  2. He does not believe that God was right and just in allowing the suffering.

  3. He believes in the ultimate and final righteousness of God.

  4. But he does not believe in the present righteousness.
