TITLE: Religious, but not Righteous

TEXT: Matthew 5:3-9

PROPOSITION: There are hypocrites in the church.

Introduction

  3. Jesus did not say – Religious – but RIGHTEOUS

  4. Hypocrisy = symptom – We must treat the disease, symptom will go



RELIGIOUS RIGHTEOUS

 

  1. I did not get a divorce 1. Work at having a good marriage.
    Ephesians 5:25 Love your wives
    Colossians 3:21 Provoke children to wrath

     

  2. I have not killed anyone 2. Not hate, hold grudges, bitterness, anger
    1 John 3:15 Hate brother = murderer
    Ephesians 4:31 Bitterness, wrath, anger

     

  3. I am in the church directory 3. Worked, involved, served, visited, etc.
    James 1:27 pure religion = Visit

     

  4. I will argue with anyone about who is right 4. Teach people WHAT is right.
    and who is wrong. Avoid personalities. Teach Bible.

     

  5. Attend most of the time. 5. Classes, Meetings, Wed. night
    Wed. nights don’t count!

     

  6. Give. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 6. With joy, love, sacrifice
    2 Corinthians 8:12; 9:7

     

  7. I am saved – repented, was baptized. 7. Converted – Luke 22:31-32

 

Conclusion

  1. Problem is not that people are too far from the building.

  2. They are too far from God.

  3. Many are “religious” but they are not hungry to be “righteous.”
