SIMON SAYS

Luke 7:36-50

Introduction

1.      Children plan a game of “Simon Says”

2.      Jesus ate a meal with a Pharisee named Simon.

3.      A prostitute came in behind Jesus

4.      Her tears of gratitude for Jesus forgiving her.

5.      NOTE: The verb in v. 48 is past tense – already forgiven.

SIMON SAYS: PRETEND YOU’RE NOT A SINNER

1.      Simon was living in sin and did not know it.

2.      Sermon on the Mount – Matt. 5-7

3.      Matthew 23 – to Pharisees, hypocrites

4.      Parable points out ALL are sinners

a.      Both were in debt and broke

b.      Both needed forgiveness of the debt

5.      The woman was not MORE lost than the Pharisee

6.      How much sin (or type of sin) will make one lost?
 

SIMON SAYS: PRETEND A SIN’S NOT A SIN UNLESS YOU DO IT

1.      Simon knew what the woman had done

2.      He forgot what he had done

3.      She was guilty of committing sin; he was guilty of omitting sin

4.      James 4:17
 

SIMON SAYS: ACT LIKE THE OTHER FELLOW’S SINS ARE WORSE THAN YOURS

1.      She was guilty of blatant sexual sins

2.      Simon knew it: she knew it

3.      Simon was a sinner; but did not know it

4.      Simon says, ignoring commands is better than breaking them

5.      Matthew 7:21-23

6.      Rev. 21:8
 

SIMON SAYS: DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE SINS THAT NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT

1.      Open, public sins of the woman are bad.

2.      His hidden, unknown sins were OK.

3.      She sought forgiveness; he did not seek forgiveness

4.      Every secret thing – exposed

a.      Mark 4:22

b.      Luke 8:17
