TITLE: WHO CANNOT BE SAVED?

TEXT: Mark 10:17-22

Introduction

  1. God wants all men to be saved.
  2. Salvation requires our faith and obedience.
  3. We learn some things from the rich young ruler.

One cannot be saved if:

  1. He makes money his god: "That trust in riches."

1.    This young man could not be saved because riches were more precious to him than life or the Prince of Life

2.    1 Timothy 6:9-10 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  1. He is an immoral person

1.    Mark 10:19  You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’

2.    A person may be moral and unsaved, but he cannot be saved in his immorality

3.    See Works of the Flesh in Galatians 5:19-21

  1. He is self-righteous, like this young man (Mark 10:20). "With man it is impossible."

1.    Before he can or will enter the kingdom, a man must be humble

2.    Matthew 5:20  For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

3.    Matthew 18:3  and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

  1. He is uncharitable (Mark 10:21).

1.    The religion of Christ has a man-ward side as well as a God-ward side

2.    James 1:27  Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

  1. He who turns away from Jesus, as did this young man.

1.    Jesus is man's only hope; he who turns from Him has no other

2.    John 6:66-68  66From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” 68But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

3.    Acts 4:11-12  11This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

4.    John 14:6  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

One can be saved if they are:

  1. The obedient. This young man came asking, "What shall I do?" Jesus pointed out some things for him to do (James 2:14, 17; Acts 9:6; 16:22).
  2. Act NOW! "Go--come--follow." All present tense. All of God's commands are for today (2 Corinthians 6:2; John 9:4). Death may come without warning (Luke 12:16-20--"this night").
  3. Merciful: "Distribute to the poor" (Matthew 5:7).
  4. Call upon the Lord. (Acts 22:16 When the opportunity was gone, it was forever gone (Isaiah 55:6).)
