1. Background of Memorial Day
a. Annually on the last Monday in May.
b. First – Decoration Day
c. Began after Civil War for Confederate dead
d. Later it became a day to remember the lives of all who served their country.
e. Today, it is a day to decorate graves of all – flowers and wreaths.
2. Memorial defined
a. That which keeps alive the memory of someone or something.
b. It is from the Greek word meaning “mindful.”
c. It is something said or done in remembrance.
d. It is a commemoration.
3. “Memorial” is a Bible term
a. 32 times in the Bible
b. Rainbow – Genesis 9:12-17
c. Passover – Exodus 12:14
d. Sabbath – Deuteronomy 5:12-15
4. The Greatest Memorial – The Lord’s Supper
a. Greater than any person, event or thing. Greater that any monument, store or shrine.
b. It was begun by Jesus as a memorial to His suffering for sins – Luke 22:19-20
c. As we discuss the greatest memorial – notice 4 things:
i. The Right Participants – Christians
1. Who is to partake of the Lord’s supper?
2. Matthew 26:29; Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7
ii. The Right Spirit – John 4:24

a. Past – vs. 25, 26
b. Future – v. 26
c. Present – v. 28

1. Unleavened bread
2. Fruit of the vine – Luke 22:19-20
5. Conclusion:
a. The Lord’s Supper is the greatest of all memorials.
b. It is a remembrance of Jesus’ cruel death upon the cross
c. It is an act of Christian worship on the first day of the week
d. It is a proclamation that Jesus lives!
e. When we partake of it we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes again.
f. Let’s examine ourselves that we may be able to partake of it in a well pleasing manner.
