TITLE: Are we a Christian Nation?

INTRODUCTION:

  2. The answer is more complicated than a simple – Yes or No

  3. The answer depends on your usage of the word “Christian”


Christ-like Qualities

  1. YES

  2. “She was a Christian lady.”

  3. We mean – kind, compassionate, helpful

  4. We help those who hate us – Earthquakes, Tsunami

  5. We rebuild after we win a war – Germany, Japan

  6. We are the most giving, caring, compassionate people on earth


World Religion

  1. YES

  2. Many use the word “Christian” as opposed to Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish

  3. As world religions go – we are Christian


Believe in Jesus

  1. YES

  2. Over 95% of adults in USA claim a belief in Jesus

  3. 98% believe in God (Supreme Being, Creator)


Denominational usage

  1. YES

  2. The view is that all denominations are part of the Christian church

  3. America is more - “Christian” than not


Practicing, Participate, Involved

  1. NO

  2. Less than 40% attend any church, chapel or synagogue on any weekend

  3. Almost 2/3 of America are “unchurched”


Moral Values

  1. NO

  2. Abortion – about 50% support

  3. Same-sex marriages – just less than 25% support

  4. Only 8% think music piracy is wrong

  5. Only 7% of all who claim to be Christians, give regularly to a church

  6. Christians are more likely to buy lottery tickets than atheists
