TITLE: Election Time
TEXT: Romans 13:1-6
PROPOSITION: Election time raises some questions about the Christian and his government.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Every 4 years in November – US elects a person to be president for the next 4 years.

  2. Every election brings some questions and issues to the front of our minds.


Must a Christian vote?

  1. It is your right and privilege to vote

  2. If you do not vote – don’t complain for the next 4 years

  3. If you do vote but do not win:

    1. Remember you expressed your view

    2. You still need to pray for the winner

  4. If you do vote and win – remember

    1. Remember you may have voted for the wrong man

    2. You still need to pray for the winner


How can I separate the moral from the political issues?

  1. You can’t – and should not

  2. Homosexuality

  3. Same sex marriages

  4. Abortion

  5. Gambling

  6. Divorce

  7. Pornography


Can the government legislate morality?

  1. Said so often – some are beginning to believe it

  2. Truth us – every law is MORAL

  3. Morality is ALL that CAN be legislated

  4. Real Issue: WHOSE morality will be legislated?


What if my taxes are used in a wrong way?

  1. Pay your taxes – anyway

  2. You have ways to let your voice be heard

    1. Letter to newspaper

    2. Letter to lawmakers

    3. Organize or join organizations to support your views


Isn’t separation of church and state in the constitution?

  1. No – it is not in the original constitution

    1. It is not in any amendment

    2. 1st amendment – prohibits state from controlling religion

  2. The first amendment is a “one way” restriction.

    1. The state must not control religion

    2. The state must stay out of the religious beliefs

  3. This does not forbid religious people from expressing and seeking to make law their moral, spiritual and religious values


Can a Christian vote for ________ and still be a faithful Christian?

  1. In the last election ½ voted for the wrong person

  2. Political party is not a test of fellowship

  3. Most candidates have some view with which we disagree

  4. We MUST see to elect men that will (in general) uphold our values.


What involvement should the church have?

  1. Promote one candidate over another – NO

  2. Print moral article with political conclusions – NO

  3. Urge people to vote – YES

  4. Pray for our leaders – YES

    1. Public prayers – watch the wording

    2. “Help us elect NEW leaders”

    3. “Help us KEEP our good leadership”
