TITLE:  Great Expectations
TEXT:  Luke 6:32-36
PROPOSITION:  We are often disappointed because our expectations were too high.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Have you ever been disappointed?
  2. People disappoint us because they do not do what we desire, expect
  3. If you expect perfection – you are set up for disappointment
  4. Today – a study of Luke 6 and 7

 

About Other People: Give them up – Luke 6:32-36

  1. Do good – expect nothing in return
  2. We often do – expecting to get in return
  3. My father started a dinner program
    1. Invite a family for dinner
    2. Ask them NOT to invite you – but some other family
    3. Pass it on!

 

About Jesus: Lift them up – Luke 7:1-10

  1. Roman soldier knew he was not worthy
  2. He put all his expectations in Jesus
  3. You will never go wrong looking unto Jesus – Hebrews 12:1-2
  4. “S” words – Salvation, Shepherd, Sustainer, Strength, Song
  5. We can do this with every letter
    1. A – Alpha, Author, Advocate, Amen, Apostle, Almighty
    2. B – Beloved, Brightness, Beloved, Bread of life, Branch
    3. C – Captain, Chosen, Comforter, Cornerstone, Counselor
  6. You can never expect too much of the one who is our “all in all”

 

About the preacher: Lighten up – Luke 7:18-35

  1. John the Baptist was a disappointment to many
  2. What were you expecting from John?
    1. A weakling – mealy-mouthed
    2. A softie, wearing fine clothes
  3. Throw away your expectations
    1. Romans 3:4 – God is true, man is a liar
    2. Don’t trust this preacher (or any other)
  4. Same goes for elders, deacons, other workers – human, will fail

 

About yourself: Toughen up – Luke 7:36-50

  1. Woman enters house – washes Jesus feet
  2. She expected must from herself – demanded action
  3. Challenge – stretch – out of “comfort zone”
  4. Be tough on yourself – demand more from all you do
