TITLE:  Who Needs a Lawyer?
TEXT:  1 John 2:1-3
PROPOSITION:  Jesus is our advocate (lawyer).

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Lawyers, as a profession, often have a bad reputation.
  2. We think of them in terms of a shyster and crook
  3. Think about this – Jesus is our lawyer.

 

Define “Advocate”

  1. Dictionary – to plead in favor of, one who defends, vindicates another, a person who pleads for or on behalf of another, intercessor
  2. Greek word – parakletos – to call to one’s side, for aid, legal assistance, counsel for defense
  3. Text –
    1. Do not sin – try your best to live according to God’s will
    2. If you do sin – you have a lawyer – Jesus Christ, the Righteous

 

Who needs a lawyer?

  1. Estate planning, wills –
  2. Protect ownership – buy a house or business, enter a partnership
  3. Accused of wrong doing – need some legal defense
  4. Adoption – child custody
  5. Involved in a lawsuit –
    1. You sue someone who wronged you
    2. You are sued by someone who feels you wronged them
  6. When you violate the law
  7. When you need legal advice, knowledge to make a proper decision
  8. Legal protection – abuse, protection order, separation, divorce

 

Jesus Christ is our Advocate

  1. We ought to live right – do not sin
  2. When we sin, we need a lawyer – Call Jesus

 

God is the Righteous Judge

  1. All of the Godhead is on our side
  2. If God be for us – Romans 8:31
  3. Holy Spirit is our “comforter” (Greek – parakletos)
