INTRODUCTION:
- While much discussion is on the young professional –

- We are also living longer – more older – more retired
- Why a sermon about old people? You will be there
someday.
- Many nations facing an aging population –
- Japan and Germany worse crisis than USA
- Baby-boomers are ready to retire
- Social security, health care, work force
- Relationships last longer – more 50, 60 75 anniversaries
- As health fades – often faith fades away, too.
Older is not always better
- Health
- This body is not what it used to be
- Too many limitations - frustrating
- Finances and Independence
- Elderly cherish independence most of all
- Fear the feeling of being a burden
- Money must be preserved – not flaunted
- Loneliness
- Outliving family and friends is depressing
- Depression is a top problem among elderly
- Loss of faith
- Treated as usless – time to retire
- Many drop out of church life – programs and activities
The best is yet to be
- Prosperity
- Used to be elderly = poor
- Now elderly = motor home, travel, more resources
- Hard-won wisdom
- “Been there, done that, on my way back.”
- Much information is lost when elderly dies.
- Spiritual maturity
- God’s promises seem more real
- Tested by time
- Love and time
- Elderly think – little time left
- Actually – more time than anyone else
- Volunteer – hospital, mission work, church work,
charity causes
Make room for the elderly
- Do not forget the old
- Youth group, children’s activities
- What about elderly? 39’ers, Golden Agers, etc.
- Broaden your family
- Include an elderly – lonely at holiday time
- Take them out to dinner
We are never too old to grow – learn – try new things
- Make new relationships as old ones fade
- Do something new
- More elderly – learning to send email to grandchildren
- Old does not mean DEAD!
- Psalm 92:14-15
- Retired man wanted to go to college – friend said, “You
will be 70 when you graduate.” He answered, “I’m going to be 70 anyway.”
- Janet teaching pre-school class – needed a helper –
suggested a grandmother type – Grace Kinser was a great helper in that class.
Grow in faith
- Continue to study, read, listen
- No one has “heard it all before”
- Keep learning
All of have an end coming
- Will you be faithful “to the end”?
