The NEED to Sing

  1. Brief history of music

    1. Genesis 4:21 – Jubal played musical instruments

    2. Genesis 31:27 – Laban asks about music

    3. Judges 7:18 – Gideon played the trumpet to win the battle

    4. Psalms – songs of praise to God

    5. Song of Solomon and Lamentations are songs

  1. Jesus Sang – Matthew 26:30

  2. Early Church sang – Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16

  3. There will be singing in heaven – Revelation 5:9

  4. Why SING?

    1. To be uplifted – James 5:13

    2. To comfort – Mark 14:26; Acts 16:25

    3. To glorify God – Romans 15:9b; Revelation 15:3a

    4. To encourage the church – Hebrews 2:12

The NATURE of Singing

  1. Attitude

    1. 1 Corinthians 14:15 – Understanding

    2. Ephesians 5:19 – Speak to one another

    3. Colossians 3:16 – Teach / Admonish

  1. Action

    1. All NT passages mention singing

    2. No other kinds of music are authorized

    3. No mechanical additions

  1. No vocals that do not communicate

    1. No whistling

    2. No humming

    3. No handclapping

    4. No imitation of musical instruments

  1. Why?

    1. They do not teach, admonish, or speak to others

    2. We cannot do them with understanding


Some NOTATIONS to aid our singing

  1. Outwardly

    1. Sit close together

    2. Sit up straight

    3. Sing out loud

  1. Inwardly

    1. Pay attention to the words and meaning

    2. Visualize the imagery of the song

    3. See how the chorus relates to the main point of the song


Conclusion:

  1. We NEED to sing – Commanded, Uplift, Glorify God, Encourage, Comfort

  2. We should understand the nature of our singing – spirit, admonish, understand

  3. We should seek to sing our best
