TITLE: Volunteer or Slave?

TEXT: Romans 6:16-18
PROPOSITION: We are to be the slaves of God.
QUESTION: Why?
KEY WORD: Meanings
SCRIPTURE READING: Same

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Why do we have to “beg” for workers – teachers, prepare communion, work in VBS, host youth devotionals, other works of this church?

  2. Some believe that “church” is an organization to which we volunteer. Therefore, you can't MAKE me do anything. If you pressure me (make me a slave) I will just run away.

  3. Are we “slaves” or are we “volunteers” in the church?

Slaves

  1. The original word – does not mean – held against my will

  2. The word means - “devoted to; to give myself wholly”

  3. I might be a slave to golf – not a bad thing

  4. 2 Peter 2:19 – slaves of corruption

Volunteers

  1. Being a member of the church is a voluntary decision

  2. One should not be “forced” to be baptized

  3. Like any organization – the church has rules and expectations of members

    1. Why join a club and refuse to participate in the work of that club?

    2. Why join an organization and not support what they are doing?

Which are Christians – Slaves or Volunteers?

  1. BOTH

  2. Slaves

    1. We are devoted to Christ

    2. We give our selves to the work of the church

    3. Pray - “Use us up in thy service.”

    4. God is looking for those devoted to Him

  3. Volunteers

    1. Members by our own choice

    2. You can “quit” the church anytime you want

    3. You are not forced to attend, give, work, participate
