TITLE:  See My Zeal
TEXT:  2 Kings 10:15-17
PROPOSITION:  Zeal is often dangerous.
QUESTION:  Why?

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Life with no zeal = lack luster, lack power
  2. Zeal is the engine in our car – Zeal makes us go
  3. Every life must have drive, must be Christ driven
  4. Jehu gives zeal a bad name
    1. Elisha anoints him
    2. Causes the death of Jezebel
    3. Destroys all of Ahab’s 70 sons
    4. Tricks Baal worshippers into gathering – slaughters them

 

BEWARE OF A ZEAL FOR GOD THAT ADVERTISES ITSELF

  1. Prayer – Matthew 6:5
  2. Alms giving – Matthew 6:2
  3. A zeal for self – boasts about our zeal for God
  4. Can you imagine Christ calling attention to His zeal?

 

BEWARD OF A ZEAL THAT DESTROYS MORE THAN IT BUILDS

  1. Sometimes there is a need for a wrecking crew – tear down to build better
  2. Jehu did not build, replace – just kill and tear down
  3. Even though those killed were bad, wicked people
  4. See the policy of Christ
    1. Cleansed the temple – twice
    2. Think about how many times he fed, healed, helped, touched
  5. Make sure our zeal is constructive.

 

BEWARE OF A ZEAL THAT DOESN’T ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN LIVING

  1. Jehu departed not from the sins of Jereboam (2 Kings 10:29)
  2. 1st remove beam from own eye – Matthew 7:5
  3. We would be better served to see the fiery zeal of Isaiah, Jeremiah, or Amos

 

Conclusion

  1. Be aware that the negative zeal tears down but leaves the lot vacant, empty
  2. We need to be filled with Christ –
  3. Ephesians 5:18 – not with wine, filled with the Spirit
