Kernels of Corn
TEXT: Psalm 103:1-5

INTRODUCTION:
- Over 300 years ago – struggled to survive the harsh
winters
- William Brewster – plate of clams and cold water – said
he was grateful to God “for the abundance of the sea and the treasures hid in
the sand.”
- Pilgrims had a custom of placing 5 kernels of corn on
each plate.
Each person would pick up a kernel and express appreciation for something
- Story of family – 5 kernels one each plate – small boy –
thanks for (1) daddy, (2) mommy, (3) sister, (4) pet dog, - (5) he was
thankful there are only 5 kernels of corn
- In our text, God mentions 5 kernels of corn for us to
think about this Thanksgiving.
Forgiveness – vs. 3a – “Who forgives
all your iniquities”
- Psalm 86:5 – You, O Lord, are good and ready to forgive
- 1 John 1:9 – Confess sins, faithful and just to forgive
our sins and cleanse us
Healing – vs. 3b – “Who heals all
your diseases”
- James 5:15 – The prayer of faith will save the sick
- 3 John 1:2 – I pray that you be in health – as your soul
prospers
Redemption – vs. 4a – “ Who redeems
your life from destruction”
- Ephesians 1:7 – In Him we have redemption through His
blood
- Hebrews 9:12 – By His own blood … having obtained
eternal redemption
Loving Kindness – vs. 4b – “Who
crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies”
- Hebrew word – Hased – God’s special care, protection,
providence over His children
- This describes a God who watches, protects, loves, and
provides
- I reject the idea of “guardian angels” – God is my
bodyguard
Renewal – vs. 5 – “Who satisfies
your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:16 – Inward man is renewed day by day
- Romans 12:2 - Be transformed by the renewing of your
mind
