TITLE: Are You Sure?

TEXT: 1 John 5:10-13

PROPOSITION: Christians do not have to live in doubt about their salvation.

QUESTION: Which?

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Elderly lady in nursing home – praying to die and go to heaven.
  2. Man – “I keep trying. I hope to make it.”
  3. BOTH are sure heaven exists.
    The first is sure she will be there.
    The second is not sure he will make it.
  4. What about you? Are you sure?

 

Once Saved, Always Saved

  1. Hebrews 10:26-31
    1. Disobedient, law breakers
    2. Willful rebellion against God
  2. Galatians 5:4
    1. Obey God = law keepers
    2. Some obey for the wrong reasons
  3. Hebrews 3:12
    1. Evil heart can be in a Christian
    2. This Christian can DEPART from God

Always Trying, Never Sure

  1. “I am trying.” Read Bible, pray, attend church
  2. I try to live right – most of the time.
    1. Romans 3:28 – Forgiveness is not based on “how good you live.”
    2. Forgiveness is based on your faith
    3. Galatians 2:16 – No one goes to heaven based on how good they are
  3. We are never sure of the minimum requirements.
    1. 3 prayers, 5 verses read, 1 kind word
    2. How much is enough?

Never Perfect, Fully Forgiven

  1. Philippians 3:12 – Not already perfect
  2. 1 John 1:9 – If we confess – He will forgive ALL our sins
  3. Here are the questions to ask yourself this morning.
    1. Am I in Jesus? Romans 8:1 No condemnation

                                                               i.      Do you believe? Galatians 3:26-27

                                                              ii.      Have you obeyed in baptism? Romans 6:3-4

    1. Am I walking in the light? 1 John 1:7
    2. Is Jesus in you? Colossians 1:27 Christ in you, hope of glory

We Can Know – FOR SURE – (study our text)

Verse 10     You have the witness in yourself

Verse 11     Eternal life is in the Son

Verse 12     Have the Son = Have eternal life

Verse 13     “You may know that you have eternal life.”
