TITLE: Avoid Resolutions – Part 1
TEXT: Mark 10:35-40
PROPOSITION: Some resolutions are based on false assumptions.
QUESTION: Which?
KEY WORD: Resolutions
SCRIPTURE READING: Same

  1. INTRODUCTION: Many make New Year’s Resolutions.
  2. Most do not last – keep up – follow through. Last a week to a month.
  3. Why make promises that you know you will not keep?
  4. Resolved: I will not make any resolutions this year.
  5. Here are some resolutions to AVOID!
  1. Seek baptism of the Holy Spirit. John 16:13
HS baptism – for the apostles ONLY – No one else.
Simon asked for some of this power and was wrong. Acts 8
  2. Seek baptism of fire. Matthew 3:10-12
Fire = punishment of the wicked. Eternal fire of hell.
    You don’t want this.
Many mistake this for HS baptism – "cloven tongues like fire sat on them"
  3. Expect God to speak directly to you. Hebrews 1:1-2
    God speaks through his Son.
  4. Resolve to keep the 10 Commandments. Colossians 2:14-16
This law ended at the cross. Now under New Testament.
Many of these laws have been strengthened to deal with attitude not just action.
  5. To be saved by:
Faith only – Sprinkling – Outside the church
Personal might, goodness, good deeds, etc.
  6. To be saved from sins – apart from – the following:
Faith in Jesus – John 8:24
    Repentance – Luke 13:3
    Baptism – Mark 16:16
  7. To change your life without:
    Repentance – 2 Peter 3:9
    Confession – James 5:16

I am not saying – Don’t make any resolutions this year.

Even if you don’t keep them long – it is worth the try.

MAKE SURE THE RESOLUTION IS BIBLICAL.
