TITLE: Power of a Mother’s Influence
TEXT: Hebrews 11:24-26

2. Mothers have great power to influence and shape their children.

3. Study some examples of a mother’s influence.

Moses

  1. Hebrews 11:24-26 - This is the result (effect) of his training.
  2. What was the cause? Amram and Jochebed - Levites.
  3. Grew up in king’s palace - never lost concern for Hebrews.

Ruth

  1. Mother-In-Law - many jokes, power extends to others in family.
  2. Ruth married to Naomi’s son. Naomi’s husband and sons died.
  3. Ruth chose to follow Naomi back to Israel. "you’re God is my God."

Timothy

  1. Timothy had a spiritual father. 1 Timothy 1:1-2
  2. Background was mother and grandmother. 2 Timothy 1:5-6
  3. Faith comes by hearing the the word. Romans 10:17
  4. Timothy had faith -
    Inherited - borrowed - from parents.
    Becomes personal, abiding, deep faith.

Ahaziah 2 Chronicles 22:3, 10

  1. Sad, low-point in Judah - His mother was Athaliah.
  2. He was wicked - "For his mother was his counselor to do wickedly."
  3. When he died - she killed all her sons and grandchildren. (10)

General Principle

  1. Proverbs 22:6 = general principle - NOT iron-clad guarantee
  2. Early years are very important. As twig is bent, so tree will grow.
  3. In today’s society - new set of challenges for parents.
    Both work - away from home - lack time to train
    Use of babysitter, day care, and nursery school - DANGER!
  4. NOTE: Many other factors involved - peers, school, TV, music, movies
    This is all the more reason for an extra effort by parents.
