TITLE: No Small Stir
TEXT: Acts 19:23-28
PROPOSITION: God expects the Gospel to cause a stir.

  1. INTRODUCTION: "no small stir" means "a great stir"
  2. The cause of it – "that way" (Acts 19:9)
  3. They imprisoned those of the way – Acts 9:2
  4. They persecuted this way – Acts 22:4
  5. Background – Diana, not just an idol – the foundation of their economy
  6. Bring in the gospel = disrupt the financial security of Ephesus.
  7. The gospel was turning their world upside down. (Acts 17:6)

 

The Nature of the Gospel Produces a Stir

  1. Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
  2. Dispel darkness with light (Matthew 5:14)
  3. Spread purity among the immoral.
  4. Urges moderation in world of excess.
  5. Convicts of SIN among those who love sin.
  6. Teaches truth where error is espoused.
  7. WHY DOES THE GOSPEL PRODUCE A STIR?
    One God – stirs the idolater and atheist
    Creator – stirs the evolutionist
    Bible authority – stirs the modernist
    Immortality – stirs the materialist (this world only view)
    One church – stirs the denominationalist
    Lordship of Jesus – stirs the self-centered, Burger King, Frank Sinatra world
    I want what I want, Have it your way, I did it my way
  8. In conduct of life:
    Drinking, Gossip, Abortion, Homosexuality, Adultery, Divorce, etc.

 

The Gospel Produces a Stir – Peculiar System

  1. Peculiar thinking – Philippians 4:8
  2. Peculiar security – Forgiven, saved, God’s family
  3. Peculiar teaching – Distinctive, Restoration, Biblical, Gospel

 

The Way Produced by the Stir

  1. A salesman must be excited about his product.
  2. "You don’t want any magazines do you?"
  3. Our product – the gospel. Get Excited!
  4. We are taking the gospel to the World!
  5. They are lost and we have the answer they are looking for!
