TITLE:  Right in Own Eyes
TEXT:  Judges 17:6
PROPOSITION:  Everyone needs a moral compass.
QUESTION:  Why?
KEY WORD:  Criteria
SCRIPTURE READING:  Same

 INTRODUCTION:

  1. Today we hear phrases like:
    1. Do your own thing
    2. If it feels right, do it
    3. Situation ethics
  2. When we lack the criteria to make informed decisions, we drown in immorality.

 No King

  1. At this time “king” was like chief of a tribe, mayor of a city
  2. There was no one leading, now one in charge, no guiding authority
  3. There was no judge, no magistrate, no one to keep us going the right direction

 Do what is right

  1. What makes some things right or wrong?
  2. How can I decide if something is wrong?
  3. RIGHT – has several uses
    1. Divine – God is our absolute authority
    2. Legal – local, state, and national laws control our conduct
    3. Moral – sense of ought, innate sense of right and wrong
    4. Hebrew word – straight, level, proper, upright

 In our own eyes

  1. Proverbs 12:16 – a fools vexation is known in a day
  2. Proverbs 14:12 – There is a way that seems right to man
  3. Proverbs 16:2 - All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, but Jehovah weighs the spirits.
  4. Jeremiah 44:16-17 - As for the Word that you have spoken to us in the name of Jehovah, we will not listen to you. But we will certainly do whatever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our rulers, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.
  5. Deuteronomy 12:8 - You shall not do according to all that we do here today, each doing whatever is right in his own eyes.
