TITLE: Pitfalls of Leadership

INTRODUCTION:

  1. God wants leadership in the local congregation.
  2. Wrong leaders, however, can be more dangerous than none.

Pride vs. Humility – James 4:6, 10

  1. Danger of focusing on programs, numbers, dollars
  2. Should focus on lives changed, spiritual impact.
  3. We can do much – not worry about who gets the glory.

Lust vs. Purity – 1 Timothy 1:5

  1. Self-control means – eye, thought, body, relationship CONTROL
  2. Make sure heart is pure, conscience is good, faith is sincere.

Winning (victory at all cost) vs. Integrity – Psalm 15:1-5

  1. Leaders must not compromise Biblical truth.
  2. We can change methods to reach social and cultural changes.
  3. When we abandon Christ – "You can do nothing."

Emotional decisions vs. Godly Wisdom – Philippians 2:3-8

  1. Leaders must possess the mind of Christ – think as He thought.
  2. Emotions can blind us – to right and truth
    facts and both sides of the story
    causes – man just see the effects
    Must work for solutions – not just dwell on problems.

  1. Disappointment – loss of appointment, direction, focus, goals
  2. Discouragment – loss of courage, fortitude
  3. Disillusionment – loss of vision, dreams
  4. Depression – loss of pressure (internal), energy, drive
