KEY WORD: Kinds

SCRIPTURE READING: Same

INTRODUCTION:

  1. We hear it everywhere – stores, TV, movies, music
  2. Hear it enough – it will be part of our vocabulary.
  3. Today we will observe 6 kinds of profanity.

1. Vain reference to the Sacred

  1. Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain"
  2. Any reference to a title for deity – God, Jesus, Lord

2. Swearing

  1. Matthew 5:34 "Swear not at all"
  2. James 5:12 "But above all, do not swear"
  3. Let your word be your bond – Yes = yes; No = no
  4. Taking an oath "I swear", "By God", "So help me God"

3. Sacrilegious (Profane)

  1. Hebrews 12:28 "With reverence and godly fear"
  2. Hebrews 10:29 "Trample under food the Son of God"
  3. Jokes, making God do immoral things
  4. Hebrews 12:16 "Profane person like Esau"
  5. 2 Timothy 2:16 "Shun profane idle babbling"

4. Cursing

  1. James 3:9-10 "Out of same mouth, blessing and cursing"
  2. Express the eternal destiny of another
  3. "Hell" "Damn you" "Curse you"

5. Idle Words

  1. Matthew 12:36-37 "Every idle word – give account in judgment"
  2. Idle – NOT jokes, weather, chit-chat
  3. Idle = carnal, earthly things (base, vulgar)

6. Vulgar

  1. Ephesians 5:4 "Nether filthiness"
  2. James 1:21 "Lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness"
  3. Gutter language, filthy words

Why do people use such language?

  1. Habit – They do not realize that they are saying such things.
  2. Associations – Hear it so often, becomes common, nornal
  3. Disrespect for Deity
  4. Lack of vocabulary – 600,000 words in English – learn some new ones
  5. World (TV, movies) creeping into our lives – Come out and be separate

How serious is this sin?

  1. Tells God and others of your polluted mind – Matthew 12:34
Out of abundance of heart, mouth speaks
  2. You set your eternal judgment – Matthew 12:37
By your words justified, by your words condemned
