  1. Reasons for better adjustment
    1. Parents interfere more when younger
    2. Not ready to turn loose
    3. Young are more sensitive to interference
  2. Two situations which contribute to problems
    1. Newly married – If you live with one of your parents – remember:

1) Not your home

2) Brother-in-law & sister-in-law not under your control

3) You will not have privacy

4) Learn to share the load – clothes, dishes, cooking, yard

5) Work out financial details – rent, utilities, food, duration

    1. Older in-law in the home – If you live with a child – remember:

1) This is their home

2) Don’t take over and run things

3) Must adapt to their lifestyle

4) Help with chores if able to

5) Children are noisy

6) They still will entertain their friends – (you not included)

  1. Two sides to the issue

Children Say:

Parents Say:

They hover over us

They are not mature enough to turn loose

Still call us “kids” and “baby”

He is 42, but he is still my baby

Treat us as children

They will always be our children

Try to run our home

We try to help them avoid the mistakes we made

Give too much advice

We are just sharing our experience

Try to help too much

We are in a position to help them

 NOTE:

Advice is received when asked for.

Resisted when donated.

Some things are learned ONLY by failing – walking, jobs, buying a car
