TITLE: Scapegoat

TEXT: Leviticus 16:8-10

PROPOSITION: Christ is our scapegoat.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. We use the word "scapegoat" to mean someone we blame.
  2. When something goes wrong we look for a "fall guy" to carry the blame.
  3. Tonight – look at the original scapegoat.

 

Leviticus 16 – Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)

Introductory details

  1. Date – 10th day of Tisri (this year – September 20)
  2. On some calendars – Yom Kippur
  3. Solemn Sabbath = even if not a Saturday – kept as one
    No work – Day of rest

High Priest Duties

  1. Wash, dress in white linen (not normal colorful robes)
  2. Bring to tabernacle – later the temple
    Young bullock – sin offering
    Ram for burnt offering – (personal cost) for self and family
    Two goats
  3. Makes a burnt offering of ram – takes blood of young bullock to
    cleanse the tabernacle area

Scapegoat

  1. High Priest – draws two coins – one for sacrifice, one for scapegoat
  2. One goat is killed – blood carried to Most Holy Place – around ark of cov.
  3. Goat with red scarf – scapegoat – lay hands on its head – bear sins of people
  4. Led to wilderness and – let go – carry away the sins from the people.

Christ is our Scapegoat

  1. Jews did this ceremony every year – shows it is not effective – Hebrews 10:1-3
  2. Christ was offered ONCE for all – Hebrews 9:27-28
  3. Christ is both – Sin offering – Isaiah 53:8 – died, shed blood as sacrifice
    Scapegoat – Isaiah 53:4 – bore our sins away
  4. Slain goat = Christ dying for our sins
  5. Scapegoat = Christ raised – living, cleansing from sin – 1 John 1:7
