TITLE:  Holy Spirit Today (part 2)
TEXT:  John 14:15-18
PROPOSITION:  The indwelling Spirit of God gives us power.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. This morning we discussed the various views of the indwelling Spirit.
  2. Now, in part 2, we will look at the power to Spirit imparts to Christians.

The Holy Spirit give us the POWER:

  1. Overcome Sin and Temptation
    1. Romans 8:13 – By the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh
    2. Galatians 5:16-26 – Works of flesh vs. Fruit of the Spirit
    3. Romans 8:1-8 – Law could not (weak) Spirit has power to do
  2. Overcome Doubt and Give Assurance
    1. Ephesians 1:13-14                               Sealed
    2. Romans 8:18-23                                   Patience to wait
    3. Hebrews 12:1-2                                    Endure
    4. 1 John 5:13                                           Assurance
    5. 1 John 3:24                                           Abides with us
  3. Strengthen and Comfort
    1. John 14:16-18 – Not left comfortless
    2. John 14:26 – Comforter will come, teach us all things
    3. Ephesians 3:16 – Strengthened in the inner man
  4. Proof of our Salvation
    1. Romans 8:16 – Spirit bears witness with our spirit
    2. NOTE: WITH – not TO
    3. There must be agreement between the two spirits.

5.       Mark us as Genuine

  1. Ephesians 1:13 – Sealed with Holy Spirit of promise

  2. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 – Give us the Spirit as a guarantee

  3. Ephesians 4:30 – Sealed for the day of redemption

  4. “Seal” is not like air-tight, nothing gets in or out

  5. “Seal” marks the item as Genuine, proof of ownership, authentic
