TITLE:  Holy Spirit Today (Part 1)
TEXT:  Acts 2:38-41
PROPOSITION:  Christians have the promise of the indwelling Spirit.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Several passages that teach the indwelling of the Spirit.
    1. Acts 5:32 – give to those that obey Him
    2. Romans 8:9-11
    3. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 – you are the temple of God, Spirit of God dwells in you
    4. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Body is the temple of Holy Spirit in you
    5. Galatians 4:6 – God sent forth His Spirit into your hearts
    6. 1 Thessalonians 4:8 – God has given the Holy Spirit to you
  2. The real issue is what does He do?
  3. How does He dwell in us?

 

Wrong Views on the Indwelling Spirit

  1. It is just a mystery – can’t understand.
    1. There are some mysteries – 1 Timothy 3:16
    2. We just need to study so we can understand
  2. Holy Spirit Baptism
    1. Acts 5:12 – By the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders we done among the people
    2. Power of HS baptism = all gifts, power to distribute gifts, revelation and inspiration
    3. Distribution ONLY through laying on of apostle’s hands
  3. Laying on of Hands
    1. With laying on hand of an apostle – A gift was given
    2. As the Spirit saw the use and ability of the person – 1 Corinthians 12:11
    3. Romans 1:11 – long to impart some spiritual gift to you
    4. Acts 8:12-15 – Peter & John
    5. Acts 19:2-6
  4. Salvation / Remission of sins
    1. Salvation is for sinners – 1 Timothy 1:15
    2. Indwelling is for Christians – Galatians 4:6
  5. Eternal Life
    1. Indwelling is NOW
    2. Eternal life is LATER – Mark 10:29-30
  6. Receive the Word
    1. Acts 2:37 – Received the Word
    2. V. 38 Promises indwelling after repentance and baptism
    3. James 1:21 – Receive Word – Ability to be saved
  7. Mere Influence
    1. Romans 8:9-12
    2. Resurrection is not by an influence – but POWER
  8. Holy Disposition
    1. Already heard the word – pricked in their hearts
    2. Cried out – What shall we do?

     

What is this indwelling of the Holy Spirit?

  1. Non-miraculous (see above points)
  2. Given to all who obey gospel – Acts 5:32
  3. Questions remain:
    1. What does He do?
    2. How does He work today?
    3. What are the blessings from His indwelling?
