A Living Hope

             1 Peter 1:3-9 One sentence in the Greek

  I. Our hope is the work of God.

       A. 1 Peter 1:3a “Blessed [praised] be the God and Father

            of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His

            abundant mercy…”

       B. 1 Peter 1:3b “…has begotten us again…”

            1. John 3:3-5

            2. Romans 6:3-4 “Or do you not know that as many of

       C. 1 Peter 1:3c “…to a living hope through the

            resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”

            1. 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But now Christ is risen from

                the dead, and has become the first fruits of those

                who have fallen asleep.”

            2. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 “But I do not want you to

 II. Our hope is guarded for the faithful.

       A. 1 Peter 1:4a “to an inheritance incorruptible

            [imperishable (margin) permanent] and undefiled and

            that does not fade away” [“The amaranth was a fabled

            flower whose bloom was perpetual, and whose

            loveliness never failed” Woods]

       B. 1 Peter 1:4b “reserved in heaven for you” Lenski says

            the meaning is God is guardian of our inheritance

       C. 1 Peter 1:5

            1. “kept” - “to guard, protect by military

                guard” (Thayer 658)

            2. Contingent on the Christian’s faith

III. Our hope produces rejoicing.

       A. 1 Peter 1:6 Despite trials

       B. 1 Peter 1:7

       C. 1 Peter 1:8 (John 20:29)

       D. 1 Peter 1:9 (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
